The Knolling Edit: Unpacking a Weekend Duffel

Knolling is the art of arranging objects at right angles on a flat surface and then photographing them from above. It was invented by a janitor at Frank Gehry’s furniture studio. It’s deeply satisfying. And unpacking a weekend duffel is the perfect excuse to try it.

The Rules of Knolling

  1. Scan your surface — clear everything off
  2. Group like items together (clothes, tech, toiletries, documents)
  3. Align everything at 90° angles — parallel or perpendicular, nothing diagonal
  4. Maintain consistent spacing between items
  5. Shoot from directly above

The Duffel Unpack

Start with your duffel at the top of the frame. I used the Lug Airbus 2 Duffel — it’s the right size for a weekend trip and the quilted exterior adds nice texture to the shot. Below it, arrange everything that was inside in a perfect grid:

  • Row 1: Rolled t-shirts (roll, don’t fold — they photograph neater)
  • Row 2: Toiletry case, socks, underwear (grouped by size)
  • Row 3: Book, headphones, phone charger (tech + entertainment)
  • Row 4: Passport, sunglasses, travel-size bottles (small items)

Bonus points if your toiletry case matches. The Lug Bunker Toiletry Case in a coordinating color is chef’s kiss — it’s compact, structured, and has that satisfying internal organization that looks incredible when you open it for the knolling shot.

Background Matters

White surfaces make colors pop. Dark surfaces make light items glow. Wood adds warmth and texture. Avoid busy patterns — let the items be the visual interest. And shoot in bright, even light. No shadows crossing through your grid.

Post the result. Watch the dopamine roll in. You’re welcome. 🎯📐
